The household didn’t set out to build an “automation project” — they wanted the lights, gate, and AC to behave the same way regardless of which of those three power sources happens to be live at the time.
Where the obvious fix falls short
A generator with an automatic transfer switch handles the power side, but it doesn’t handle the software side. Most consumer smart-home systems assume a phone app talking to a cloud server, which means the moment the internet router itself loses power or the WAN drops — which often happens at exactly the same time as a grid outage — the “smart” system stops responding to anything, even though the lights themselves still have power from the generator. What this achieves
The household doesn’t need to know or manage which power source is active — the wake-up scene, the evening lighting, and the perimeter arm/disarm behave identically on grid, solar, or generator. What this doesn’t claim
This does not extend the home’s actual backup runtime — that’s a function of the generator’s fuel and the solar/battery sizing, which is a separate conversation with whoever installed that equipment.
